2006 Indoor World Trial Championship Round 8
Pabellon Menorca - Illes Balears, Spain - 18-2-2006
- Attendance: 5,000
Another sixth place finish - refreshed afterward
Round 8 took place at the island of Menorca, a quiet and peaceful
resort island about 30 minutes from Barcelona by air, and 5,000 trials
fans packed the stadium. Originally, Bethune was scheduled to compete,
but he couldn't make the trip, so there was a total of six riders including
Bou as a wild-card rider participated the event.
It was a tough fight for Fujinami at Illes Balears, as he desperately
needed to stop the streak of bad results, and was trying hard to find
out the problems he had been suffering. He was under a lot of pressure,
and it might have affected his riding, as he often missed the line
even at the sections where he marked cleans.
The opening section of the lap was difficult for everybody, and Lampkin
was the only rider who rode without being fived. The section two was
even tougher, as all the riders fived throughout the day - for both
the qualification lap and the final lap. At the section five, Fuji
almost fived when landed, but held on to add two points only. At the
section six, he lost the front end grip to crash when jumped off from
the unstable obstacles; he became the only rider adding points at the
section. When the qualification lap was over, he was two points behind
Fajardo with eighteen points to finish at sixth place, thus extended
the string of sixth place finishes to three.
Fuji'steam-mate Lampkin, who had the first podium finish of the season
at Belfast two rounds ago, showed the strengthagain at Illes Balears
to finish first at the qualification lap. He couldn't repeat the performance
at the final lap, probably trying a little bit too hard for marking
cleans at some sections; he ended up adding more points than he needed.
Still, Lampkin finished third to celebrate his second podium of the
season.
Although the result was disappointing, Fuji was refreshed after the
event, because he found the clue to improve his riding. The performance
shown by the team-mate was encouraging for him too. Fuji has high hopes
for the rest of the season.
