2005 World Trial Championship Round 8

31/7/2005 Hawkstone Park, the United Kingdom

Lost by a thin tape

Sunday, July 31st

After three weeks interval from the Italian round, WTC round 8 took place at Hawkstone park in the United Kingdom under one-day format.

Fujinami picked the first starting order - the worse pick, among the top four rider by the ballot, and he did not have a chance to carefully observe other's riding.

Fuji however showed an excellent ride on the lap 1. Fuji said after the event that he got out of shape a little at the end, but he completed the lap with 27 points - 5 points ahead of Cabestany to finish first.

He continued his fine ride on the lap 2. In UK, Fuji had a game plan to avoid taking five as less as possible. He tried to mark clean, but when it was difficult, we played safe. He kept adding some points on the lap 2, but they were all small. Things were going as he planned.

Then it was the section 8, where Fuji made a small but a decisive error of the day. He hooked the section-tape with his boot and cut the tape getting a maximum penalty points.

Finishing 3rd on the lap 1, Lampkin was showing a strong ride on the later lap. He completed the lap with 12 points better than the previous lap, and he took the victory with 2 points separation from Fuji.

The series leader Adam Raga meanwhile struggled with natural sections and finished 4th. Fuji cut down the point gap by 4 points, as there are 3 more rounds to go before the season is up. It is going to be hard and serious battle for Fujinami for the rest of the season.

Quote from Fujigas:

I am frustrated. I can't stand losing by just cutting the tape. Anyway, I have to be happy that it was Lampkin who won instead of the series leader Raga. It was Lampkin's home round so I like to congratulate him for the victory. There are only 3 rounds to go, and all I can do is trying to win them all.
